2004-04-27 - 11:44 a.m. Amusing an egg This is for Rhi, tasked with more of Isolde's homework on the Three Laws of Motion to be demonstrated using an amusement park ride and an egg. I say make a playground slide Flat part at the top, with a ramp to the ground. Stick the egg on a rolling cart, bend up the edge of your 'ramp' so the cart stays on the ramp. First law: 'Object in motion tends to stay in motion and an object at rests tends to stay at rest *unless* acting on by an outside force.' You'll have to push it to get started and it will smack into the ground. Second law is the F=ma law, which could be covered with the 'harder you push, the more likely the egg breaks when it hits the ground with more force from a bigger starting push. This will become a pain if the teacher wants measurements and calculations. If she wants that, suggest she provide a strain gauge and accelerometer. Third lawFor every action there is an equal and opposite reaction is also covered by 'I push and the egg moved. It hit the ground and the ground pushed back.' I hate teachers that give parents homework. Sheesh. Two more tips: Cheap trick for moving an egg unbroken - pack it in a plastic jar filled with peanut butter. Lowest breakage rate I've ever seen. Avoid spinning things. The dynamics get more complicated and unless they've been taught them in physics, it t'ain't as simple as F=ma. |
